Schluter systems are popular with DIYers for good reason: the parts are light, pre-formed and well documented. But a shower is unforgiving. One gap the size of a pencil tip can let water into your walls for years before you notice. Here are the mistakes to watch for if you do it yourself.

1. Using the wrong thin-set

KERDI is bonded with thin-set mortar, and the type matters. Schluter's lifetime warranty requires a Schluter thin-set. Using another product can put your coverage at risk.

2. Poor mortar coverage

The membrane needs full contact with the mortar. We use the recommended 1/4" x 3/16" V-notch trowel and embed the membrane with a flat trowel, pushing out air pockets.

3. Skimping on seam overlap

Every seam needs at least 2 inches of overlap or a full strip of KERDI-BAND. Short overlaps are a common leak point.

4. Ignoring corners

Inside and outside corners are where most leaks start. Use the pre-formed KERDI-KERECK corners instead of folding membrane.

5. Forgetting the pipes and valve

The shower head pipe and mixing valve need KERDI-SEAL collars. Silicone around a pipe is not waterproofing.

6. Mixing brands

Pairing Schluter membrane with another brand's drain or board can leave a weak joint, and the manufacturer won't warranty the mix.

7. Skipping the flood test

Before any tile goes on, plug the drain and fill the floor with water for at least 24 hours. If the level drops or anything gets wet below, you find out while it's still easy to fix.

If you're doing it yourself, you can get the parts here: Schluter shower systems on Amazon. Read Schluter's installation handbook first, and see every layer of a Schluter shower, explained.
