Tile is beautiful, durable and easy to clean, but on a cold winter morning it can feel like stepping onto ice. A heated floor fixes that. If you're already replacing your bathroom floor, it's one of the best-value upgrades you can add.
How DITRA-HEAT works
Schluter DITRA-HEAT is a thin membrane with a grid of raised studs on top. A thin electric heating cable snaps between the studs, wherever you want warmth. The tile is set right over it with thin-set mortar. A wall thermostat controls the temperature and schedule.
Because the cable sits inside the membrane, there's no separate leveling layer to bury it, so the floor stays low.
It does more than heat
DITRA-HEAT is built on Schluter's DITRA uncoupling membrane. Uncoupling lets the subfloor and the tile move slightly on their own, which helps prevent cracked tile and grout. That matters on wood subfloors and in homes that settle. There's also a DITRA-HEAT-DUO version with a thermal break underneath, which helps the floor warm up faster over concrete slabs. Set with Schluter thin-set, DITRA-HEAT can also qualify for Schluter's lifetime warranty.
You can find DITRA-HEAT and other Schluter products on Amazon.
Where heated floors make the most sense
Primary bathrooms, especially in front of the vanity and shower
Bathrooms on a concrete slab, which tends to feel cold
Kitchens with large tile floors
Any room where you'd stand barefoot
What to plan for
Power: the system needs a dedicated circuit, so plan for an electrician.
Layout: we skip heat under the vanity and toilet, where nobody stands.
Thermostat: pick a spot near the door, at switch height.
Testing: we check the cable before and after tiling, so you know it works before it's covered.
Permits: electrical work may need a permit. See our Bay Area bathroom remodel permit guide.
